1 Coastguard Cottages nestles in the North Devon hamlet of Stoke, only 3 miles outside the village of Hartland in the North Devon countryside adjoining the estate of the historic Hartland Abbey. It is located on the border with Cornwall and the tranquil Welcombe Mouth in the South with its rockpools and sandy beach and the popular sleepy resort of Clovelly to the North. The house was built alongisde four further houses in 1928 for the senior coastguard at Hartland Point.
It is only a few yards from the 15th century church of St Nectons and on the road to the picturesque Hartland Quay which harboured boats from the stormy coastline where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Bristol Channel with impressive views of Lundy Island which is only a short boat ride away.
Many shipwrecks were recorded before the construction of the Lighthouse at Hartland Point just a 1 mile north of the Quay which has the charismatic Wreckers Retreat Pub and Hotel, plus its own museum for those interested in its colourful history and of course – Pirates!
